ZTE Open with Firefox OS v1.1 Having Trouble with USSD

My iPhone is still in service center for about 2 weeks now and a MozRep Indonesia is kind enough to lend me Firefox OS phone. Used to all the fancy things iPhone had so far now I have to use a device that doesnt has all that luxury.
It’s a so-so device -compare to my iPhone- (well, the target market is not for people like me), I dont have many comment about it. But this young O/S is fun to play with, specially making mobile app using only HTML5/CSS/JavaScript in the client side.

The only problem, serious problem that I have is the ability to make a USSD call.
USSD is a protocol used by GSM cellular telephones to communicate with the service provider’s servers. USSD can be used for WAP browsing, prepaid callback service, mobile-money services, location-based content services, menu-based information services, and as part of configuring the phone on the network (wikipedia).

For example:
Dial *888# to check your prepaid balance
Dial *266# if you want to activate your roaming package offers.
and many things.

The ZTE Open I’m using now unfortunately having problem with USSD operation.

The symptom is whenever you dial a USSD Code (let say *888#) via dialler,
the app only show you “connecting” status for a while
and after that, dialer app is like closing the connection and back to dial pad screen

B number finally shown. But after few seconds, the call will be closed and screen back to the dial pad

When you’re accessing the STK menu (which is more or less is executing USSD command)
You can get the first menu screen. But when you continue selecting any option from the menu, there’s nothing happen.

Operator in Indonesia use USSD for most of their services because of the easy to use menu and realtime communication with the backend. That’s why it’s a serious problem for Firefox OS/ZTE Open if this issue still occur.

So, is anybody out there using ZTE Open with Firefox OS v1.1?
Do you have the same problem as I do? I’ve posted a bug at bugzilla, but has no response yet.

A look back?

It’s been a while before Firefox OS chosen to be the new mobile operating system from Mozilla. We knew it before as Boot 2 Gecko (B2G) and i’ve got no success installation story :P Seems my phone is not in the recommended list, and i’ve messed up my raspberry pi.

Fortunately I met Philipp Wagner at Santa Clara during Mozilla Summit. Philipp is the guy who make some hacks for making FirefoxOS works on RasPi. Visit his blog and you’ll find his notes about it.

A year ago, I made this post —it’s in Indonesian— about the “launch” of Firefox OS in Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2013. Along 2013, Firefox OS is starting to shine. Well, not yet shiny. It will take some times and good support from anybody.

Firefox OS (FFOS) is an open-source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers. It’s based on Linux and open source. Not only for smartphones, FFOS is set to be used on smart TVs also. Early 2014, Panasonic and Mozilla announced their partnership to bring FFOS for powering the next generation Smart TVs. Cool, isn’t it?

Oh, there’ll be a Firefox OS Tablet also on the way.

FFOS is now available in 14 markets, mostly in South America. Big Telco names have been partnership with Mozilla to use Firefox OS including Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica, Telecom Italia, Telenor. And I’m happy the the company i’m working for will be one of them :) Yayyy…

Alcatel, ZTE, LG, Huawei and don’t forget Geekphone are shipping Firefox OS devices now. VIA is working on something to bring FFOS to desktop world.

But still, it’s hard to get the devices here to play with. Rely on simulator only is not enough.

So, what’s it gonna be this year? I’m sure FFOS will shine brighter this year, and I wish it will be easier for us (in developer point of view) to purchase the device.

A new Firefox OS Phone from LG: Fireweb

I WANT ONE!!!

I’ve seen the Keon and some people kindly enough to lend it to me and let me play for a while.
During Mozilla Summit 2013 in Santa Clara, I’ve also played with some of the devices made by ZTE. Never a fans of ZTE phones. Has one long time a go in the early day of Android, and it was so … well, couldn’t find a proper english word to describe it.
I’ve seen the list of possible partner on spreading the Firefox OS with Sony, FoxConn, Huawei, LG, TCL, Spreadtrum there along with ZTE.
I’ve seen the Geekphone Peak showed by Gary K. (Mozilla Security Engineer) at MozHQ Mountain View

But this LG Fireweb is something!
FYI, LG is launching its first Mozilla Firefox OS phone called the LG Fireweb (LG D300). The phone will be available soon in Brazil from wireless carrier Telefonica.
Like most other Firefox handsets, the Fireweb is an entry-level class. But, Fireweb has something that help set it apart from the ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Fire, including a 5MP camera with auto-focus and an LED flash. The spec is:

Size: 11.38 X 6.65 X 0.9
OS: Firefox OS v1.1

Ponsel FirefoxOS akan bisa dibeli online lho

Ponsel dengan sistem operasi FirefoxOS mulai dipasarkan global. Paling tidak sudah di 2 benua :)

Setelah Sebulan sebelumnya dipasarkan di Spanyol (Polandia akan segera menyusul), ponsel FirefoxOS hadir di Amerika Selatan. Tanggal 1 Agustus kemarin Telefonica mengumumkan bahwa Alcatel One Touch Fire dan ZTE Open akan dijual di Kolombia dan Venezuela. Keduanya dapat dibeli di toko-toko Movistar. Sedangkan untuk pasar Brazil, One Touch Fire dan ZTE Open akan dipasarkan sekitar Q4 2013 nanti.

Bagaimana dengan Indonesia?

Nah ini agak rumit untuk dijawab karena operator di Indonesia tidak menjual bundle antara ponsel dengan paket langganan selulernya. Berbeda dengan di luar negeri khususnya di Eropa ataupun benua Amerika yang ponselnyapun dipasangin logo operatornya.

So either operator launch a special package with FirefoxOS Bundled, dalam hal ini operator kombo dengan ZTE atau Alcatel (mungkin plus distributor lokalnya) atau si pabrikan ponsel (ZTE, Alcatel) yang jual langsung ke pasar Indonesia. ZTE yang saya tahu ga jualan retail, jadi mesti digandeng operator. Alcatel? Terakhir ingat nama Alcatel kayanya nun jauh di awal 2000an waktu masih belum ada 3G :)

Nah ternyata ZTE mengambil opsi jual langsung ke publik. Tanggal 12 Agustus kemarin ZTE mengumumkan kalo ponsel ZTE Open akan bisa dibeli online lewat store mereka di eBay US dan UK. Warna yang akan tersedia pertama kali adalah oranye seperti gambar di bawah ini dan harganya sekitar USD 79.99 (GBP 59.99). Kalo dirupiahkan pake kurs versi Google hari ini sekitar 823,257.08 rupiah.

Satu lagi, ponselnya akan dijual unlock. Bisa dipake di jaringan operator GSM manapun. Wooooo, ini bisa dibilang terobosan.

Mengutip pernyataan Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst di biro konsultasi Ovum, langkah ZTE untuk menjual ponselnya di eBay ini menunjukkan bahwa kebanyakan operator di dunia ini belum siap untuk menjual FirefoxOS. Dawson menambahkan kalo sekedar ‘being different’ itu ga cukup ditengah pasar smartphone yang sudah dijejali oleh Android kemudian Apple dan Windows.

Ini juga PR lumayan besar buat Mozilla sendiri dalam memasarkan FirefoxOS. Karena ya itu tadi, being different isn’t enough. Dan ngeyel ngejelasin ke orang kalau pake FirefoxOS akan memberikan pengalaman, user experience yang lebih baik itu ga akan terlalu menjual.

Nah kalau kalian mo order bisa langsung ke tokonya saja (saya ga tau yah soal shippingnya he he he).

Rock with FirefoxOS

Waktu Wikufest2012, saya menyinggung tentang trend mobile device dan juga ngomporin adik-adik untuk lebih banyak ngoprek mobile app. Mobile device tetap menjadi booming dan sepertinya makin menjadi dengan diluncurkannya banyak produk di quartal pertama 2013 ini.

Dari Mobile World Congress 2013 di Barcelona, Mozilla memulai debutnya.
Nah kebetulan juga di Wikufest2013, ada beberapa representatif Mozilla Indonesia yang menjadi pembicara. Entah seberapa jauh mereka nowel-nowel soal FirefoxOS. Yang jelas sih gelaran Firefox App Day pertama di Indonesia dilakukan tepat seminggunya. Kalau sebelumnya para peserta cuman bisa bayangin OSnya seperti apa via simulator(atau ngoprek ndiri masang B2G di handset android-nya). Now it’s real.

Tapi, apasih sebenarnya FirefoxOS itu?
To be short, FirefoxOS itu adalah sistem operasi berbasis Linux untuk mobile device (smartphone dan tablet). If you already knew Symbian, Windows Mobile, iOS, Android, this is another one.

Seperti halnya browser Firefox, FirefoxOS ini dibuat oleh Mozilla. OS ini didesain untuk dapat menjalankan aplikasi-aplikasi HTML5 untuk dapat berinteraksi dengan hardware mobile devicenya langsung. Yah kasarnya web-app talk to the hardware ‘secara native’. Weeew, menggoda sekali.

Satu hal lagi adalah, FirefoxOS dapat berjalan optimal di low-end handset.

Things that even Android cant perform.

Jadi ga perlu lagi keluar duit banyak untuk menikmati ‘smartphone’ pada akhirnya nanti. Pasar low-end handset pun akan semakin meriah, ga sekedar ponsel hitam-putih seperti sekarang ini :P Karena apa? karena ponsel-ponsel itu nanti akan kaya aplikasi.

That’s the point.

Mozilla disebutkan sudah mendapatkan komitment dari lumayan banyak operator seluler untuk ikut membantu menyebarkan FirefoxOS ini. Paling tidak ada America Moovil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefonica, Telenor, Telstra, TMN, dan VimpelCom. Sementara pabrikan devicenya ada Alcatel, ZTE, LG dan Huawei. Ah tentu saja Qualcomm sebagai suplier processor nya :)

Lho kok bisa operator seluler ikut membantu penyebarannya?
Kalau di Indonesia, pelanggan bebas membeli ponsel merek apapun dan di manapun. Nah rata-rata operator di luar negeri menjual layanannya dengan model bundling layanan + handset. Dan karena modelnya postpaid/prabayar, si pelanggan terikat kontrak dengan operator. Harga devicenya sudah termasuk dalam biaya bulanan kontrak layanannya.

Menurut Mozilla juga, Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain, dan Venezuela bakal menjadi barisan awal negara-negara yang bakal mencoba FirefoxOS. Setelahnya baru mungkin Asia. Apakah Indonesia akan menjadi yang pertama di Asia? I dont think so *baca soal bundle di atas*

But it will be a very tough market for the Fox…

Modem Error 619

Beberapa tahun lalu saya sempat posting mengenai modem 3G dan Telkomsel Flash. Namun yang berkomentar di sana kebanyakan rekan-rekan yang menanyakan tentang error 619 sewaktu modem berusaha koneksi ke jaringan data operator. Dan sialnya, error 619 itu kan dari O/S Windows sementara saya bukan pengguna Windows. Jadi susah juga mo simulasi kondisi dan bantuin jawab, akhirnya ya cuman modal googling ajah.

Dalam postingan ini, saya coba rangkum hal-hal terkait dengan error 619 itu.
Kira-kira error yang bakal muncul adalah seperti berikut:

error 619: A Connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed.

Nah, kalau lagi sial kena error 619 tersebut, apa yang sebaiknya kalian lakukan?

Paling mudah dulu, hal-hal yang terkait dengan operator

Pastikan profil GPRS dan 3G nomor kamu aktif dan tidak terblokir. Caranya? Yah kontak operator kamu.
Pastikan kamu berlangganan layanan data pada operator terkait. Dan pastikan juga layanan data itu sedang aktif, tidak sedang terblokir.
Kalau kamu pengguna prepaid, ya pastikan pulsa kamu cukup. Sapa tahu kelupaan pas giliran perpanjang masa berlangganan paket data, eh pulsa ga ada. Akhirnya deaktif/kena blok deh.
Pastikan kamu mendapatkan sinyal yang cukup dari operator kamu. Intinya no signal/bad signal ya no connection lah :)
Pastikan setingan koneksi modem kamu benar, terutama Access Number serta APN-username-password nya. Caranya? Silakan baca manual modem kamu karena beda modem tentu beda menunya dan juga website operator kamu. Beda operator akan beda pula Access Number serta APN-username-passwordnya. Jangan males.

Eh, tapi emang ga bisa diharapkan juga yah soal males tadi itu :) Ya udah berikut ini adalah setingan modem yang saya tahu dari beberapa operator GSM di Indonesia

Yang agak susah, terutama buat yang awam berkaitan dengan driver modem, Windowsnya dan modemnya itu sendiri.
Jadi jika 5 hal di atas kamu sudah sudah pastikan dan sudah lakukan juga tapi masih dapat error 619, ya problem ada di modemnya.
Kasarnya si modem tidak melakukan apa yang diminta oleh Ms Windows kamu sebagai mana semestinya.
Yang perlu dilakukan biasanya adalah:

Uninstall driver modem kamu sebelumnya
Restart komputer (mungkin tidak perlu, ya tapi Windows gitu loh)
Install lagi driver modem kamu
Restart lagi ^_^
Setting dengan benar koneksi modem kamu ke operator, lalu coba konek deh.

Kalau masih ga sukses juga, ya kepaksa ulangi lagi dari langkah 1.
